HIV and AIDS prevalence rates are increasing in Lagos with an estimated 950,000 People Living with HIV and AIDS. Stigma and discrimination fuel the spread of HIV. Denial, exclusion and violation of People Living with HIV and AIDS‟ rights are reinforced by religious beliefs, cultural practices, gender inequality, and religious leaders‟ failure to speak out. In consultation with the Bible Society of Nigeria; Hands at Work in Africa Lagos Service Centre; Christian Association of Nigeria; Lagos State AIDS Control Agency and WACC, Hope for AIDS identified a lack of coordinated faith-based involvement in Nigeria‟s fight against HIV and AIDS and confirmed local church groups have long been silent around HIV stigma. Although other community groups in Nigeria offer HIV and AIDS sensitivity training and public education, there is little understanding in the faith community of the impact of stigma. Church leadership still lacks awareness and tools to guide their communities towards non-stigmatising acceptance of People Living with HIV and AIDS. This project mobilises faith community leaders in the State of Lagos to use their influence to reduce HIV and AIDS Stigma and Discrimination and increase the provision of community care services. The project will develop and implement communication tools and strategies focused on anti-stigma messaging to enable church leaders to lead their faith community to play a positive role in HIV and AIDS prevention, community care, and policy advocacy.
