The project seeks to promote and protect human rights in the struggle against HIV and AIDS in churches and Christian faith communities. It takes place in a context of stigma, discrimination and gender inequality linked to HIV at the level of Christian communities. The project strategy is to help churches develop and implement anti-stigma sectional plans by: building the capacity of forty leaders in five churches to develop the plans; establishing ten anti-stigma cell groups in ten parishes with 30,000 members; and advocacy through radio and television broadcasts reaching 2,000,000 listeners/viewers in Lomé. The activities are expected to lead to a reduction in stigma against people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS (PLWHAs) in the participating faith communities. At least 200 PLWHAs in the 10 parishes will experience respect for the human rights and the media audience in Lomé will gain increased awareness of a faith-based approach to HIV and AIDS. The project is implemented by Groupe Chrétien Contre le Sida au Togo (GCCST), an ecumenical organisation established in 2000 in Lomé that presently brings together different faith communities to provide care and support to people living with HIV and AIDS.
