Cultural and historical factors have contributed to a situation in which the main Christian denominations in Bulgaria lack a common context for joint initiatives. The withdrawal of the Bulgarian Orthodox church from all international ecumenical organizations in 1998 made it difficult for Christians to work together, especially at official levels. To address this challenge, the project features music and poetry as common denominators for inter- Christian collaboration. Based entirely on local musical traditions, it promotes the notion of grassroots activities (cultural events) as a basis for shared Christian witness. The project will prepare Christian songs for performance in eight concerts in four Orthodox and four Protestant parishes in Sofia, Varna and Russe and a CD of selected songs from the performances. These live performances and the CD will demonstrate the desire and ability of Christian artists to work and perform together, thus setting a positive example for both laity and church leadership.
