Culture Radio FM 104.5, Sierra Leone

€ 9,000
Ref. 1377

The country‟s civil war of 10 years ago claimed the lives of over 10,000 victims and rendered the country almost ungovernable. The country, despite its huge mineral wealth, counts amongst the least developed nations in the world. Amidst endemic poverty and economic deprivation affecting the vast majority of the citizenry, the land which is the only heritage left for the people and generations yet to come, seems to be going the way of influential multilateral companies to produce crops and bio fuel for export. It is hoped that with increased capacity, Culture Radio, the only medium in the country that has taken up the issue, will create more awareness around the issue. Culture Radio hopes to embark on community sensitization and advocacy as well as giving the people affected an opportunity to air their views on the matter without fear. Culture Radio FM 104.5, founded in 2007 and duly registered with the Independent Media Commission, is a community-based radio targeting up to 400,000 listeners in most parts across Sierra Leone. The project’s immediate objective is to prevent violent situations and ensure food self sufficiency through increased access to land by local farmers who are currently not producing sufficiently due to the lack of adequate capacity.
