Senegal: Inter-African Network for Women, Media and Development (FAMEDEV)

The findings of the Global Media Monitoring Project 2005 revealed a lack of capacity in Central and Western Africa regions to undertake media monitoring from a gender perspective and to analyse monitoring results.

To address this, the Inter-African Network for Women, Media and Development (FAMEDEV) will train 25 trainers on media monitoring from a gender perspective, selected from women working in media in 20 countries in the two sub-regions.

FAMEDEV is a feminist network that strengthens and supports African women journalists and communicators. The training will highlight gender-focussed monitoring of media content during elections, given that women generally do not have equal access to media during such periods.

The training is expected to have a multiplier effect as beneficiaries replicate the training in their local national contexts. The project is expected to result in an increased capacity to participate in the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) scheduled for 2010 and more significantly, to result in a greater number of people with skills in gender-focussed media monitoring, and women's improved access to media particularly during election periods.
