Organisation: Promotion of Church People’s Response (PCPR – Negros Oriental)
Country: Philippines
In the Philippines, Christian faith communities are challenged with poverty, landlessness, foreign intervention, graft and corruption, joblessness, human rights violations, and climate change. Specifically, in the province of Negros Oriental, communities are faced with land conversions, disasters like flash floods and landslides because of environmental degradation and climate change. A culture of graft and corruption is also rampant in the province to ‘accommodate’ such projects. In 2009 the number of human rights violations escalated, along with extrajudicial killings, harassments, vilification campaigns of progressive organizations and others. In this light, PCPR-Negros Oriental is promoting grassroots ecumenism for social change. The project will contribute through education and information to mobilization and the transformation of the present situation in Negros Oriental and in general in the Philippines context. The activities will include communications training for church personnel, lay persons and representatives from different sectors, and video documentation to broaden understanding of grassroots ecumenism.
