WACC supported radio project goes online in remote area of Colombia. By Teresia Mutuku, Communication Officer and Web Manager, WACC
| | Mucho mas que una simple radio (Much more than a radio), is the slogan of Radio Educastilla, a WACC supported community radio which goes on air via internet, February 6, in one of the remotest areas of Colombia.
“At last we will test the broadcasting signal on the web. Thanks to the support of WACC that all has been made possible”, said the project director, Leonairo Chantre, in a thank you note to WACC. |
The station will broadcast a marathon of cultural education programs running from 6 A.M to 12A.M Colombian time, says Chantre.
Established by WACC project partners, Junta de Acción Comunal La Castilla Cabecera (JACCC), the radio project was developed to foster development and community building in the area. “The aim of the project is to create a focal point for the local communities to share their development efforts”, says Chantre.
JACCC, a development group that works on community building and development, addresses issues such as tolerance, peaceful coexistence, the need for consensus and for inclusive community development strategies.
WACC’s General Secretary, Karin Achtelstetter, congratulated JACCC for developing the radio project which she said would become a “community development tool and a source of news and education for the local community.”
“Congratulations on this remarkable achievement. It has been a tremendous pleasure for WACC to work with you and we believe that this effort will bear fruit and benefit the entire community”, she said in the congratulatory note.
WACC, through its Communication Rights programme, is committed to advance the rights of marginalized groups by supporting capacity building and acquisition of communication equipment that enable communities access and use appropriate information and communication technologies.
