WACC calls for new project partnership proposals Print E-mail
  Communication partners are invited to submit Concept Notes for projects starting 1 July 2011 or later. The application process consists of two stages.

Stage One: Concept Notes. Applicants are invited to complete a short form based on the criteria for project support. The deadline for projects commencing in or after 1 July 2011 is January 30, 2011. Read more...

 

 
The Rev. Karin Achtelstetter installed WACC General Secretary Print E-mail

  The Rev. Karin Achtelstetter, was installed new General Secretary of the World Association for Christian Communication (WACC), October 5, during its annual Executive committee meeting held in Toronto, Canada.

“Celebrating and giving thanks for communication leadership in its many expressions reminds us of WACC’s history and its uniqueness… this reminds us where we come from, enables us to reflect on our present and prepares us for the future,” said Achtelstetter in her inauguration speech. WACC Deputy General Secretary addresses Gender and Media Summit Print E-mail

 The Deputy General Secretary of WACC, Lavinia Mohr, has reiterated that women are still significantly underrepresented and misrepresented in news media coverage despite significant change since the Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) - coordinated by WACC- began 15 years ago.

Mohr was addressing the fourth Southern African Gender and Media Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, October 13. The theme of the Summit is Gender and Media, Diversity and Change: Taking Stock. Her keynote speech was based on the 2010 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) report: Who Makes the News? released by WACC, 29 September 2010 (see details here...) According to the GMMP report, 76% of the people heard or read about in the world's news are male. The world seen in news media remains largely a male one. Read more...
 
Carlos Valle made Honorary Life Member of WACC Print E-mail

 At a ceremony held on Tuesday 5 October 2010 Rev. Carlos A. Valle, former General Secretary of WACC, was awarded Honorary Life Membership in recognition of his services to Christian communication.

Carlos Valle, a Methodist minister from Argentina, served as WACC’s General Secretary 1986-2001. Previously he served on the Executive Committee of WACC’s Latin America Region, WACC’s Board of Directors and as a pastor in Methodist congregations in Argentina. Read more...

  In a lecture titled “Facing Peace” held at the WACC headquarters on Tuesday 5 October 2010, Dr. Jolyon Mitchell of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, explored the many different faces of violence and peace in public communication.

Taking as his theme the visible and invisible faces of violence in art and the mass media, his lecture ranged from Picasso’s painting of Guernica, the Pulitzer prize-winning photo of young girl running away from napalm bombing during the Vietnam war, Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, South Africa during apartheid, to television news coverage of the Iraq and Israeli-Palestine conflicts. Film award goes to documentary on Afghanistan Print E-mail

 The WACC-SIGNIS Human Rights Award 2010 has been given to the documentary The Garden at the End of the World, directed by Australian film-maker Gary Caganoff.

The film explores the legacy of devastation and trauma in Afghanistan and illustrates the tragic consequences of war and the widespread hunger, homelessness and lawlessness that it causes. Day of persons with disabilities in Bolivia Print E-mail
  People with disabilities in Bolivia have to face extraordinary difficulties and are usually among the most excluded sectors of society.  This has an impact in the way the media perceives and represents them and usually media portrayal is unfair and unjust, according to a statement issued by WACC’s project partner, SECRAD (The Servicio de Capacitación en Radio y Televisión para el Desarrollo in Bolivia) to commemorate the Day of Persons with Disabilities in Bolivia, October 15. Communication rights help WACC partner to fight HIV-AIDS related stigma and prejudice Print E-mail

 A WACC partner, the Suati ya Mwanamke Kijijini- Samwaki, is the runner up for the  African Network for Strategic Communication in Health and Development, AfriComNet, Award of Excellency for its use of communication in the struggle to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and the stigma people living with HIV/AIDS face in their daily lives.

AfriComNet, an association of health and development practitioners that reside, work, or have a primary interest in Africa, grants awards every year to recognise outstanding contributions made by individuals and organisations in the field of strategic HIV/AIDS communication. Readmore...

Women see modest gains in world news media portrayal, Coverage still betrays significant gender bias Print E-mail

 Women are still significantly underrepresented and misrepresented in news media coverage, according to Global Media Monitoring Project research in 108 countries coordinated by the World Association for Christian Communication, despite significant change since the project began 15 years ago.

WACC Europe’s next Assembly to be held in Frankfurt from 30 March-6 April 2011 Print E-mail
  WACC-Europe’s Steering Committee met in Tallinn, Estonia, 8-10 September in the premises of Estonian Public Broadcasting (EER), a public funded radio and television network created in June 2007. EER includes 5 national radio channels and 2 television channels.

WACC’s Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP 2010), the SIGNIS-WACC European Television Festival held in Berlin last June and the next WACC-Europe assembly were on the agenda during the two-day meeting. Other items included WACC membership, finance and planning for the year ahead. Read more...

Who makes the news?

The 2010 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) report: Who Makes the News?  was launched September 29, 2010 (see details here...) The video outlines the findings of the project research since it was launched in 1995.  GMMP report 2010 shows that 76% of the people heard or read about in the world’s news are male, 24% are female, compared to 17% in 1995.
