WACC redesigns its logo Print E-mail

By Philip Lee, WACC Deputy-Director of Programs

The World Association for Christian Communication (WACC) has redesigned its logo to include a new tagline “Communication for All”.

The tagline is the Vision Statement that emerged from the lengthy process that resulted in WACC’s Strategic Plan 2012-2016. When the Plan was approved by WACC’s Board of Directors in October 2011, a Mission and Vision Task Force was set up to craft new texts. The basic criteria were fidelity to WACC’s aims, straightforward language, conciseness, and a clear relation to WACC’s heritage and its new strategic directions.

“Communication for All”, , affirms the centrality of communication – including mass, community and social media – in strengthening human dignity and in promoting democratic values and social justice. In particular, the principle of “Communication for All” restores voice and visibility to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in a spirit of genuine solidarity.

The tagline has been translated into French and Spanish and now appears on the WACC website. One problem was making the language inclusive. While the English “All” clearly means everyone, in French and Spanish greater precision is needed. Therefore, the tagline in French reads “Communication pour toutes et tous” and in Spanish “Comunicación para todas y todos”.

WACC’s previous tagline, “Taking sides”, was launched in 2003 at the start of its Global Studies Programme on “Communication for Reconciliation”. It was also a time when WACC was closely involved in preparations for civil society input to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

WACC’s then General Secretary, Rev. Randy Naylor, described the tagline as “at the same time a rejection of the false claim of objectivity that pervades so much of the media and other communication undertakings and is a strong reflection of our mission view that we follow God who has clearly demonstrated a preferential option for the poor.”

WACC continues to take sides by focusing on strengthening the public voices and participation of poor, marginalized, excluded and dispossessed people and communities in communication worldwide.
