Member States approve the reinforcement of UNESCO’s contribution to World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) goals

With only four years left until the 2015 target date for achieving the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) goals, 195 Member States expressed their overall satisfactions with the achievements and progress made by UNESCO and reconfirmed its important role in bridging the digital and knowledge divides.

Since the outset of the WSIS process, UNESCO has been committed to implementing the WSIS outcomes.

At the 36th session of the UNESCO General Conference, 195 Member States adopted the resolution requesting UNESCO to further strengthen its leading role within the post-WSIS process towards 2015 and beyond. This includes the hosting of a WSIS multistakeholder high level event to be held at UNESCO Headquarters in 2013 in the lead up to the 2015 review by the UN General Assembly. The purpose of the event is to assess the achievements of global WSIS efforts since 2003 and also to discuss latest trends, developments and challenges in building inclusive knowledge societies.

As the integral part of the WSIS review preparatory process, the event is set to also produce recommendations for a possible post-2015 Action Plan.

WACC believes that communication and inclusive knowledge is a fundamental basic human right that defines people's common humanity, strengthens cultures and enables full participation in the society.

WACC therefore supports UNESCO’s efforts in ensuring that the WSIS goals are implemented in the lead up to the 2015 review.
